Mission and FAQ

Mission

Doctors for America is a non-profit organization of physicians and medical students who advocate for changes in the health care system to ensure affordable access to quality care for all.

Vision

  • We believe that incorporating the experiences and perspectives of physicians is critical to fashioning a solution to our current healthcare crisis.
  • We seek to engage physicians in healthcare reform through grassroots organizing.
  • We seek to create broad-based support for comprehensive healthcare reform in partnership with other advocacy organizations.

Specific goals and activities

  • Build a strong coalition of physicians and patient and professional organizations committed to health care reform.
  • Keep physicians up to date on key developments and relevant events in the healthcare debate.
  • Empower physicians to take action, express their views, and share their experiences with the Administration, Congress, and the American public at critical points in the health reform effort – when it matters the most.
  • Enable physicians to be leaders in building a broad coalition for healthcare reform among physician and non-physician healthcare groups.

Why are we focused on physicians? Why not include other healthcare providers and patients?

  • If true healthcare reform is going to take place, it will require the participation of diverse groups of patients and providers.
  • We are focused on physicians because we understand physicians well and are most effective in organizing this constituency.
  • We regularly work to expand the coalition fighting for healthcare reform representing nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, patients, and other professionals who deliver or receive healthcare.

Why do we need another organization to represent physicians? My physician organization is already engaged in healthcare reform efforts.

Doctors for America’s grassroots, broad-based coalition of physicians has allowed us to develop a framework for mobilizing physicians from different regions and specialties for a specific purpose: to make individual physicians' voices heard in the healthcare reform effort. Doctors for America does not seek to replace existing healthcare efforts by other physician organizations. Instead, Doctors for America seeks to augment these efforts by keeping our members informed about activities taking place across the spectrum of physician organizations and giving them a concrete channel through which to voice their ideas.

Are we affiliated with or financed by the Democratic National Committee or Barack Obama?

No – we are not affiliated with any partisan group or with the administration. Our membership is drawn from across the political spectrum, and we encourage our members to speak out individually about their own beliefs and experiences in the health care system.
