Stories (Doctors for America)

Gillette, NJ

NJ My 33 year old relative was afflicted with a severe progressive deterioration of both hips necessitating total replacements. She wants to be independent and return to work. Her health care providers have been stellar (surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, EMT's etc...), but the insurance company has made the situation difficult. They have double billed thousands of dollars on a number of occasions. They stopped paying for her physical therapy despite documented progressive improvement towards goals set by the surgeon, physical therapist, and physiatrist. The appeals process has been nearly impossible to penetrate.

I work in the VA system where none of this would have happened. Services are provided when indicated and only terminated when not. These determinations are made by clinicians and patients, not payers.
