Stories (Doctors for America)

Mashpee, MA

MA I have a patient who didn't have insurance for several years and so seldom sought care for her hyperthyroidism and only sometimes could afford the medication to help control her symptoms till she could have definitive treatment. She then got health insurance through her job last November and they wouldn't cover her hyperthyroidism so we were still in a bind despite her "having insurance". She finally qualified a month ago for MassHealth in addition to her private insurance so we can finally get her definitive treatment. Just yesterday I saw another woman who only qualifies for MassHealth Limited so am very limited as to what I can do to help her with many pain issues and depression that need treatment now but she cannot afford xrays, specialists or PT on her own. Thankfully there is now the WalMart drug plan matched by several other pharmacies so I can often find affordable medication options. I could go on all day with stories. Our health care is in desperate need of a fix for the many poor and working poor who are already struggling and now find their health becomes an impediment to there moving ahead.
